Royal Mail vs Evri for Etsy UK Sellers

Written by · updated · checked against Etsy help: buying Royal Mail and Evri labels and Royal Mail price guide, October 2026 · how we check

Etsy sells both Royal Mail and Evri labels inside the seller dashboard, so the question is not which one you can use but which one to pick for each order. The answer splits cleanly by destination, weight and value: Royal Mail for anything international, thin or precious; Evri for heavier domestic parcels and for sellers whose nearest drop-off is an Evri locker. This guide sets out the split with the prices in force after Royal Mail's 5 October 2026 change.

    The short answer

Use Royal Mail for anything international (Etsy's Evri labels are UK only), for fragile or high-value pieces (Special Delivery carries £750 of cover) and for thin items that qualify as a Large Letter (Tracked 48 £2.90). Use Evri for domestic parcels over about 2 kg (£6.59 for 2 to 5 kg against Royal Mail's Medium Parcel at £7.00 under 2 kg and £9.00 for 2 to 10 kg) and when a 24/7 Evri locker is more convenient than the Post Office. Both labels are bought through Etsy with tracking added to the order automatically.

    International orders: Royal Mail

Etsy's Evri labels cover UK addresses only, and the Evri-to-US option was suspended in August 2025, so every overseas order goes by Royal Mail. Etsy offers International Standard, Tracked and Tracked & Signed with the customs documents generated for you. Use a tracked service for anything of value; an untracked overseas parcel is almost impossible to claim on if it goes missing.

Thin items: the Large Letter wins

Anything under 35.3 × 25 × 2.5 cm and 1 kg (cards, prints, jewellery in a flat box, a scarf, a slim book) qualifies for Royal Mail's Large Letter format, and Tracked 48 Large Letter at £2.90 with £75 of cover is the cheapest tracked option any courier offers. Evri has no letter format; its cheapest service, the letterbox-sized Postable at £2.70, carries no cover at all. A padded envelope that bulges past 2.5 cm loses the format and becomes a Small Parcel.

Up to 2 kg: a close call

For a Small Parcel (45 × 35 × 16 cm, 2 kg) the two are close. Royal Mail Tracked 48 is £3.75 online since 5 October 2026 with £75 of cover and a Post Office, Collect+ or Royal Mail locker drop-off. Evri is £3.04 to the door for under 1 kg (£2.62 to a ParcelShop) and £3.52 for 1 to 2 kg, with £20 of cover and a ParcelShop or Evri locker drop-off. Pick by cover and convenience: Royal Mail for a £40 handmade piece, Evri for a £12 print the buyer wants quickly and a locker on your route.

    Over 2 kg: Evri

Above 2 kg Royal Mail moves to the Medium Parcel format at £7.00 by 2nd Class up to 2 kg and £9.00 up to 10 kg (£13.70 up to 20 kg), while Evri charges £6.59 for 2 to 5 kg, £6.68 for 5 to 10 kg and £10.28 for 10 to 15 kg. For pottery, textiles and homeware in that range Evri is usually £1.50 to £3 cheaper. Royal Mail is the only one of the two that goes above 15 kg, up to 20 kg.

    Cover and fragile pieces

Evri's standard cover is £20; Royal Mail Tracked includes £75 and Special Delivery £750 (from £9.85 since October, £16.05 for 2 kg). For ceramics, glass and anything worth more than £20, Royal Mail is the sensible choice even when Evri's label is cheaper, and the item should be double-boxed whichever courier carries it: wrapped, in an inner box with padding, inside a larger outer box with more padding. Photograph the packing in case you need to claim.

    Labels and drop-off

Royal Mail labels bought on the Etsy website (not the Seller app) can be issued as a QR code that the Post Office prints; otherwise print at home. Drop Royal Mail parcels at a Post Office, Collect+ shop or Royal Mail locker, or put a prepaid barcoded parcel up to 44 × 35 × 16 cm in a parcel postbox. Evri labels through Etsy are print-at-home PDFs, dropped at any ParcelShop or Evri locker; unused labels are refundable within 15 days. Tracking is attached to the order automatically for both.

    Worked example

An Etsy shop sends three orders in a day. A pair of earrings in a flat box to Bristol: Royal Mail Tracked 48 Large Letter, £2.90. A knitted blanket, 2.6 kg, to Glasgow: Evri at £6.59 against Royal Mail's £9.00. A ceramic bowl worth £85 to a buyer in Dublin: Royal Mail International Tracked, because Evri does not go abroad and a tracked service is the only one worth claiming on. Three labels, two couriers, all bought from the order pages with tracking attached automatically.

Choosing between Royal Mail and Evri for an Etsy order

    1. 1
Check the destination: international orders go Royal Mail; Etsy's Evri labels cover UK addresses only
    2. 2
Weigh and measure the packed parcel: under 2.5 cm thick and up to 1 kg is a Royal Mail Large Letter (Tracked 48 £2.90), the cheapest tracked option
    3. 3
Up to 2 kg: Royal Mail Tracked 48 Small Parcel (£3.75) and Evri (£3.04 to the door under 1 kg, £3.52 for 1 to 2 kg) are close; pick by convenience and cover
    4. 4
Over 2 kg: compare Evri (£6.59 for 2 to 5 kg) with Royal Mail Medium Parcel (£9.00 for 2 to 10 kg by 2nd Class online); Evri is usually cheaper
    5. 5
Buy the label from the order page; Royal Mail labels bought on the website can be issued as a QR code printed at the Post Office
    6. 6
Drop Royal Mail parcels at a Post Office, Collect+ shop, Royal Mail locker or parcel postbox; drop Evri parcels at a ParcelShop or Evri locker
    7. 7
For pieces worth over £100 choose Royal Mail Special Delivery (from £9.85); its £750 of cover dwarfs Evri's £20

Where Etsy sellers pick the wrong courier

    • Using Royal Mail Medium Parcel for every heavy domestic order; Evri is typically £1.50 to £3 cheaper between 2 and 15 kg
    • Trying to send an international order with an Etsy Evri label; they are UK only, and the US service was suspended in August 2025
    • Sending valuable handmade pieces with Evri's £20 standard cover instead of Royal Mail Tracked (£75) or Special Delivery (£750)
    • Buying Royal Mail labels at the Post Office counter; Etsy's online price is lower and the tracking is added automatically
    • Leaving Shipping Profiles at April 2026 prices after the 5 October rise

    Questions sellers ask about this

Is Royal Mail or Evri better for Etsy UK sellers in 2026?

Royal Mail is the better default: it handles international orders, is trusted by buyers, offers £75 of cover on Tracked and £750 on Special Delivery, and its Large Letter format is the cheapest way to send small flat items. Evri wins on price for domestic parcels over about 2 kg (£6.59 for 2 to 5 kg against Royal Mail's £9.00 Medium Parcel) and on convenience if there is an Evri locker near you. Most sellers use both: Royal Mail for the small and the valuable, Evri for the bulky.

Does Etsy integrate with Royal Mail for UK shipping?

Yes. From the order page you can buy Royal Mail 1st or 2nd Class, Signed For, Tracked 24 and 48, Special Delivery and international services, with the buyer's address pre-filled and the tracking number attached to the order automatically. Labels bought on the Etsy website (not the Seller app) can be issued as a QR code that the Post Office prints for you. Etsy says its rates include discounts, though it does not publish the percentage.

Can Etsy sellers use Evri for UK orders?

Yes. Evri labels are sold through Etsy for UK domestic orders (standard and next-day), dropped at any Evri ParcelShop or Evri locker, with tracking added to the order automatically. Unused labels can be refunded within 15 days and claims must be raised within 28 days. They are supplied as printable PDFs; Etsy documents the QR-code option only for Royal Mail. Evri's standard cover is £20, so for anything valuable use Royal Mail Tracked or Special Delivery instead.

Which courier is better for fragile handmade items?

Royal Mail. Tracked 24 and 48 include £75 of cover and Special Delivery £750, and the Post Office counter is a staffed hand-over. Evri accepts fragile items at the sender's risk with £20 of standard cover. Whichever you use, double-box ceramics and glass (the wrapped item in an inner box with padding, inside a larger outer box) and photograph the packing in case you need to claim.

How do I add Evri tracking to an Etsy order?

If you bought the Evri label through Etsy, you do not need to: the tracking number is attached to the order automatically and the buyer is notified. If you bought an Evri label elsewhere (for example on evri.com with a QR code), open Orders & Delivery, choose 'Complete order', select Evri as the carrier and paste the tracking number. Do it straight after drop-off; Etsy's seller protection depends on tracking evidence in an 'item not received' case.

Does Royal Mail cover international shipping for Etsy sellers?

Yes. Royal Mail is Etsy's international carrier for UK sellers, with International Standard, Tracked and Tracked & Signed services and customs documents generated by Etsy. Use a tracked service for anything of value: untracked overseas parcels are almost impossible to claim on. Evri labels bought through Etsy are UK only, and the Evri-to-US option was suspended in August 2025.
