How to Ship a Coat in the UK: Best Courier Options

Written by · updated · checked against InPost UK: locker sizes and Evri: parcel size and weight guide · how we check

Coats are the bulkiest thing most resellers send, and the item most likely to fail at a locker door. Whether a coat can go by InPost comes down to how deep it packs, which depends far more on the packaging and the fold than on the coat. This guide sets out which coats fit which InPost compartment, the packing method that loses the most depth, when Evri or Royal Mail is the right call, what cover a designer coat actually gets, and what each option costs after the October 2026 price change.

    The short answer

Lightweight coats and jackets can usually go by InPost: rolled tightly in a mailing bag with the air pressed out, most fit a Large compartment (41 × 38 × 64 cm) and some fit a Medium (19 cm deep). Heavy winter coats, long overcoats and anything in a box usually exceed 41 cm and go by Evri (up to 120 cm and 15 kg at a ParcelShop) or Royal Mail's Medium Parcel (61 × 46 × 46 cm, 20 kg). A vacuum bag halves the depth of a puffer. For a coat worth more than about £100 sold outside a marketplace, use Royal Mail Special Delivery for £750 of cover.

Will it fit an InPost compartment?

InPost compartments are 38 cm wide and 64 cm high; only the depth changes, at 8, 19 or 41 cm, and every size carries up to 15 kg. A coat rolled from the collar down and sealed in a mailing bag is a cylinder about 25 to 35 cm across for a wool coat, which needs a Large, and 12 to 18 cm for a light jacket, which fits a Medium. Folded flat instead of rolled, a trench coat or mac can come down to 10 to 15 cm. A coat in a cardboard box is almost always over 41 cm once the box is sealed, which is why boxes are the mistake to avoid.

On Vinted the InPost option is only offered in the standard tier of up to 2 kg, so a heavy coat may not be offered InPost at all; the buyer will see Evri and Royal Mail instead. List bulky coats in the right size category so that happens cleanly.

Packing a coat to lose depth

Empty the pockets, do up the buttons or zip so the front lies flat, fold the sleeves across the body and fold the coat lengthways in half. Then either fold it again into thirds for a flat parcel, or roll it tightly from the collar down for a cylinder. Slide it into the largest polythene mailing bag that fits (a 60 × 80 cm bag for a long coat), press out as much air as you can and seal it. For puffer and down jackets, a vacuum bag removes the air that makes up most of their volume and can halve the depth. Measure the packed parcel at its thickest point and compare it with 19 and 41 cm.

    • Mailing bag, not a box: the single biggest saving in depth
    • Fold in thirds or roll tightly: a half-folded coat is far deeper than a rolled one
    • Press the air out, or vacuum-pack a puffer
    • Skip bubble wrap; a coat does not need it and it adds centimetres

When to use Evri or Royal Mail instead

If the packed coat is over 41 cm deep or over 15 kg (unlikely, but a heavy parka with its box can reach 3 kg), it cannot go by InPost however it is folded. Evri ParcelShops take parcels up to 120 cm on the longest side and 245 cm combined, up to 15 kg, and Evri's own lockers take up to 62 × 57 × 39 cm. Royal Mail's Medium Parcel format is 61 × 46 × 46 cm and 20 kg, which suits a long coat in a box. On Vinted and eBay the buyer's choice of carrier decides where it goes; if you buy your own postage, Evri is usually cheaper than Royal Mail for a coat over 2 kg.

    Cover for a designer coat

InPost covers second-hand items only up to £50, so a lost Barbour, North Face or Canada Goose coat is effectively uninsured by InPost itself. On Vinted, integrated-label orders are covered by Vinted up to £500; on eBay, Simple Delivery protection runs from the first scan. For a coat worth more than that, or sold outside a marketplace, Royal Mail Special Delivery includes £750 of cover (£1,000 or £2,500 for a small fee) and a signature. Evri's standard cover is £20, raised to £999 only when you book directly and add it. Photograph the coat, its labels and any wear before you pack it.

    What it costs

Sending direct: an InPost Large compartment is £3.99 to another locker or shop and £5.99 to a home address, a Medium £2.59 or £3.99. Evri is £2.62 to a ParcelShop or £3.52 to the door for a 1 to 2 kg parcel (£4.79 for the larger standard size). A Royal Mail 2nd Class Medium Parcel is £7.00 up to 2 kg since 5 October 2026 and £9.00 up to 10 kg; Special Delivery for a 2 kg coat is £16.05. On Vinted, eBay and Depop the buyer pays the marketplace's own rate, so for marketplace sales the question is only which carrier the coat fits.

    Worked example

A wool overcoat sold on Vinted for £60, buyer chose InPost. Folded in half in a box it is 48 × 38 × 24 cm, which is a Large with little room to spare and an awkward shape. Folded in thirds in a 60 × 80 cm mailing bag with the air pressed out it is 40 × 30 × 15 cm: a Medium. The InPost app shows the retail-park locker with eight Mediums free, the door closes first time, and the first scan shows in Vinted within minutes. The same coat in a rigid box at 46 cm deep would have meant a trip back home and a message to Vinted to switch the courier.

    Packing and sending a coat

    1. 1
Empty the pockets, fasten the front and fold the sleeves in so the coat lies flat
    2. 2
Fold lengthways in half, then into thirds, or roll tightly from the collar down
    3. 3
For a puffer or down jacket, use a vacuum compression bag to remove the air
    4. 4
Slide the coat into the largest mailing bag that fits, press the air out and seal; avoid rigid boxes
    5. 5
Measure the packed depth at its thickest point: under 19 cm is an InPost Medium, under 41 cm a Large
    6. 6
Over 41 cm, or over 15 kg: Evri (ParcelShop or Evri locker) or Royal Mail Medium Parcel
    7. 7
For an expensive coat sold outside a marketplace, use Royal Mail Special Delivery for £750 of cover

Why coats fail at the locker

    • Forcing a bulky coat into a compartment; the door will not close and the trip is wasted
    • Using a cardboard box, which adds depth a coat does not need
    • Not compressing a puffer jacket, which is mostly air and shrinks dramatically in a vacuum bag
    • Forgetting that a wet-weather or heavy wool coat can weigh 2 kg or more, which rules out InPost on Vinted
    • Sending a designer coat by InPost outside a marketplace and relying on its £50 second-hand cover

    Questions sellers ask about this

Can I send a puffer jacket by InPost?

Usually. Puffer jackets are mostly air: press the air out before sealing the mailing bag, or use a vacuum compression bag, and a lightweight puffer goes into a Medium compartment (19 cm deep) while a thicker down jacket needs a Large (41 cm). Very thick ski-style puffers and long down coats can exceed even the Large depth and are better sent by Evri. Measure the packed parcel at its thickest point before you set off.

How much does it cost to ship a coat in the UK in 2026?

Sending direct: an InPost Large compartment is £3.99 locker to locker or £5.99 to a home address if the coat fits 41 × 38 × 64 cm; Evri is £3.52 to £4.79 to the door for a 1 to 2 kg parcel (most coats) or £2.62 to a ParcelShop; a Royal Mail 2nd Class Medium Parcel is £7.00 up to 2 kg since 5 October 2026. On Vinted, eBay and Depop the buyer pays the marketplace's own rate. InPost is cheapest if the coat fits a locker, and a mailing bag rather than a box is what makes it fit.

What is the best way to pack a long winter coat?

Fasten the front, fold the sleeves in, fold the coat lengthways in half and then roll it from the collar down as tightly as you can. Put it in the largest polythene mailing bag that fits without excess air (60 × 80 cm for a long coat), squeeze out the remaining air and seal. Avoid a box, which adds depth and volume. A tightly rolled long winter coat in a mailing bag can often fit an InPost Large compartment, whereas the same coat in a box would exceed the limits.

Can I send a designer or luxury coat by InPost?

You can, but InPost covers second-hand items only up to £50, so a lost designer coat is effectively uninsured unless the marketplace covers it: Vinted's protection goes up to £500 on its own labels and eBay's Simple Delivery protection runs from the first scan. For coats worth more than that, or sold outside a marketplace, use Royal Mail Special Delivery for £750 of built-in cover (£1,000 or £2,500 for a small fee). Photograph the coat, its labels and any wear before packing.

Are there size restrictions for coats on Vinted?

Vinted sends coats by InPost (if the coat fits a compartment and is under the 2 kg standard tier), Evri or Royal Mail, and the buyer picks the carrier at checkout from the ones your size category allows. List a bulky winter coat in the right size category and it will be offered with Evri or Royal Mail, whose limits (15 kg and 120 cm for Evri, 20 kg and 61 × 46 × 46 cm for Royal Mail) suit it. Setting the category correctly avoids a parcel that is refused at drop-off.
