eBay: Evri vs Royal Mail. Which Courier Should You Use?
Written by Omair Sao · updated · checked against eBay UK help: Simple Delivery and Evri: parcel size and weight guide · how we check
Under eBay's Simple Delivery the buyer pays the same postage price whether the parcel travels with Evri, Royal Mail or InPost, so the old question of which is cheaper has mostly gone away for private sellers. What is left is a practical choice about drop-off, speed, parcel size and cover, and a trap in the postage preferences that makes every listing dearer if you restrict the couriers. This guide covers when each courier is the better fit, what buyers think, what to do with parcels over 15 kg, and how the sums change for business sellers who still buy their own labels.
The short answer
Keep both enabled and let eBay assign the courier; that keeps the buyer's price lowest (from £2.94 for a small parcel since September 2026). Prefer Royal Mail when speed or buyer trust matters, when you want a home collection, or when the parcel is between 15 and 20 kg. Prefer Evri for bulky parcels up to 120 cm long, for 24/7 drop-off at an Evri locker and when the nearest Post Office is inconvenient. Selecting 'Royal Mail only' in your preferences pushes the buyer's price up (from £3.38), and 'Evri only' loses you the Post Office and Collect+ network.
The price is the same, so the choice is practical
Since 1 September 2026 Simple Delivery prices postage by parcel size and item value, and the figure is identical whichever courier eBay assigns: £2.94 for a small parcel up to 1 kg on an item under £75, rising by value band to £6.84. The one way to change the price is to restrict your couriers, which moves the buyer to a dearer table ('Royal Mail only' starts at £3.38 for the same parcel). So for private sellers the question is not cost but which network you can get to, how fast the buyer needs it and whether the parcel is within each courier's limits.
When Royal Mail is the better fit
Royal Mail wins on speed, trust and weight. Tracked 24 is the next-day option, and eBay buyers who remember Hermes, collectors and anyone spending real money still prefer a Royal Mail label on a valuable item. The network is the widest: 11,500 Post Offices, around 8,000 Collect+ counters that stay open later, 2,600 Royal Mail lockers, parcel postboxes for a prepaid barcoded parcel up to 44 × 35 × 16 cm, and Parcel Collect from your door (50p per parcel since October 2026). It is also the only Simple Delivery courier other than DHL that takes parcels over 15 kg, up to 20 kg in the Medium Parcel format.
When Evri is the better fit
Evri wins on size and hours. A ParcelShop takes parcels up to 120 cm on the longest side and 245 cm combined, against Royal Mail's 61 × 46 × 46 cm Medium Parcel, so a long or awkward item that is under 15 kg often has to go by Evri. Evri's own lockers (since March 2026) take up to 62 × 57 × 39 cm at any hour and print the label from the QR code, which solves the Post Office queue. Standard delivery is two to four working days rather than next day, and the first scan at a ParcelShop usually waits for the evening collection, so keep the receipt.
Business sellers who buy their own labels
If you are a business seller, or selling an item outside Simple Delivery, you still buy postage yourself and the sums matter. Since 5 October 2026 Royal Mail Tracked 48 is £3.75 online for a Small Parcel (£75 of cover) and £2.90 for a Large Letter; Evri is £3.04 to the door for under 1 kg (£2.62 to a ParcelShop) with £20 of cover. Above 2 kg Evri pulls ahead: £6.59 for 2 to 5 kg against Royal Mail's £9.00 Medium Parcel. Below 1 kg they are close enough that cover and convenience should decide.
Parcels over 15 kg
Evri and InPost stop at 15 kg. Between 15 and 20 kg eBay assigns Royal Mail (Medium Parcel, 61 × 46 × 46 cm) and up to 30 kg DHL home collection. Yodel's old 30 kg drop-off service disappeared when the brand became InPost in July 2026. Enter the packed weight accurately when you list so eBay offers the couriers that can actually carry the parcel, and leave DHL enabled for heavy items.
Worked example
Two sales on the same day. A £180 camera lens, 600 g in a padded box: both couriers could carry it, but a collector buyer and the value make Royal Mail the reassuring choice, and if eBay assigns Evri the seller still has eBay's protection from the first scan. A £40 floor lamp base, 95 cm long and 4 kg: outside Royal Mail's Medium Parcel length, so it is an Evri parcel, dropped at a ParcelShop with the receipt kept. Both buyers paid the Simple Delivery price for their item's value band, and neither seller bought a label.
Getting the courier choice right on eBay
- 1Enter the packed weight and dimensions accurately when you list; eBay uses them to price postage and to decide which couriers are offered
- 2Leave all Simple Delivery couriers enabled unless you have a specific reason to exclude one
- 3After the sale, check which courier eBay assigned and get the QR code or label from the order
- 4Royal Mail: show the QR code at a Post Office, Collect+ shop or Royal Mail locker, print the label for a parcel postbox, or book a home collection
- 5Evri: show the QR code at a ParcelShop or scan it at an Evri locker, and keep the receipt
- 6Post within your handling time so eBay's loss and damage cover applies from the first scan
- 7For parcels over 15 kg expect Royal Mail (up to 20 kg) or a DHL home collection (up to 30 kg); Evri and InPost stop at 15 kg
The preferences and habits that cost eBay sellers
- Excluding Evri and InPost in your postage preferences; 'Royal Mail only' makes every listing's postage dearer for the buyer
- Expecting Evri to be next-day; its standard service is two to four working days, and Royal Mail Tracked 24 is the next-day option
- Missing your handling time; eBay's Simple Delivery protection depends on the first carrier scan happening within it
- Listing a parcel over 15 kg and assuming Evri will take it; only Royal Mail (20 kg) and DHL (30 kg) can
- Sending with your own postage; private sellers must use the Simple Delivery label for eligible items
